Basic Theology for Kids (episode 45)

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished.  And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.  Acts 4:13

Be encouraged that God specializes in using ordinary, weak people.  Peter and John were considered to be uneducated, common men, yet they were able to speak the truth with boldness because they had been with Jesus.  Paul expands on this truth in 1 Corinthians 1:26-29:

26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

It can be intimidating to teach God’s word to your kids.  Maybe the word “theology” seems overwhelming to you.  If so, here are a few reminders to help you stay the course:

  • Don’t be afraid to teach your kids powerful truth from the bible. That may sound like a weird thing to say, but we often sell ourselves short because we feel ordinary or weak when it comes to theology, so we just don’t do it.
  • Don’t sell yourself short. God has called you to raise disciples and He will equip you with the wisdom and knowledge to carry out the task.  Be teachable and seek to grow in your knowledge of God and His word.  The tools are plentiful, but often we are not disciplined in our use of time.
  • Don’t grow weary. Galatian 6:9 instructs us to “…not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”  The promises of God are one of the most valuable things you can help your kids come to possess.   Work hard at this.
