Back to the Basics (episode 42)

There’s something refreshing about going back to the basics.  Whether in sports, marriage, or finances, the basics need to be in place for a thing to work as intended. The basics are those foundational pieces that everything else builds on.  When it comes to building disciples at home, there are several basics that need to be revisited as we navigate this awesome responsibility.  Here are two of the big ones.

  1. To build disciples at home, you have to be growing as a disciple yourself. Our kids are watching us closely.  Our actions are teaching them, whether we like it or not.  None of us are perfect – or even good – but we can purse the One who is.  Notice, I didn’t say you have to be growing a lot, just growing.  Jesus calls it abiding and instructs us to simply stay attached to Him.  This doesn’t require a class or a new leather journal, just your time and attention.  “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” – James 4:8
  2. Building disciples at home starts with building a deeper relationship with your child. You’ve probably heard the saying that rules without relationship leads to rebellion.  The same is true for discipleship.  Your kids have questions they’d like to ask you, but they don’t know how yet.  As your kids grow, it’s hard work to keep an open line of communication with them – especially regarding the things of God.  Thankfully, God shows us how to do relationships.  He pursues us.  He cares about the little things in our lives.  He knows our likes and dislikes.  And a big one here, He’s always there for us – which means He’s never too busy to listen and talk.
